(c. 1033–1109) a medieval Christian
thinker Anselm was a BENEDICTINE monk (see
MONKS AND NUNS) who rose to become archbishop of
CANTERBURY, the most important Christian leader in
England. After he died, the Roman Catholic Church
offi cially declared him a SAINT. He is venerated on
April 21, the date of his death. Anselm is remembered most for the way he
tried to prove that GOD exists (see GOD, THE EXISTENCE
OF). He defi ned God as "the greatest object
that can be thought of." Then he argued that, given
this defi nition, God had to exist: A God who actually
existed would be greater than any God who
was only imagined. Anselm also claimed that no
one could know what the word "God" means and
still doubt that God existed.
Some people have rejected Anselm's proof.
Among them are the great Christian theologian
Thomas AQUINAS and the important philosopher
Immanuel Kant.
