Clinton Joseph Davisson - Biography. American physicist Birth October 22, 1881 Death February 1, 1958 Place of Birth Bloomington, Illinois Known for Discovering that electrons show wavelike properties, and diffract (change direction and intensity) when passed through a crystal Sharing the 1937 Nobel Prize in physics with George P. Thomson, for work on the wave properties of electrons Career 1908 Received his B.A. in physics from the University of Chicago 1911 Completed his Ph.D. in physics at Princeton University 1911-1917 Taught physics as an instructor at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh 1917-1946 Worked as a researcher for Bell Telephone Laboratories 1927 Discovered that electrons can be diffracted by crystals, confirming that they exhibit wave-like properties Did You Know Davisson's electron-diffraction discovery was made accidentally during another experiment. Davisson turned down teaching positions in order to completely devote himself to research at Bell Labs. Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2009. © 1993-2008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
