Languages of Europe - geography. Overview A single language family--Indo-European--accounts for all but a few European languages. Speakers of Indo-European languages spread across Europe beginning 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. About 2,000 years ago, settlers from Italy, many of whom were decommissioned Roman soldiers, spread Latin to many parts of the Roman Empire. The Romance languages of these regions derive from Latin. After the empire fell, Germanic-speaking peoples occupied former Roman provinces such as England, and Slavicspeaking peoples spread across eastern Europe.
