Dear Felicia,

Last month, I was reading a news paper and found a very interesting job offer. As you may know, since I am deaf it is very hard to find a job where you will be completely accepted, so I decided to apply to the new Kentucky Fried Chicken branch for deaf people only.

On the first day there, all the employees and me got introduced by an interpreter to our manager Aly Sarhan. The first impression we got about him, was that he didn’t really care about us because of his lack of investment in trying to communicate with us but later on we realised that he was determined to learn sign language and this changed everything about him. He is a very admirable, responsible young man that we all look up to. He considers us as his family which is very sweet of him.

My job consists in serving our customers. Since they don’t know sign language, we invented a picture menu. All they have to do is point at the picture of the food they want. Sometimes some customers are confused, so they are very happy to know that Mr. Sarhan can speak their language. He always takes the time to explain how everything works and the customers are very grateful.

To make this place pleasant, there are certain rules we have to follow. First we have to be hygienic, then we have to respect our clients and lastly we have to respect each other. The working conditions are honestly great; you wouldn’t think that working in a fast food restaurant would be very pleasant but here it is different. We are more than employees, we are family.

I am very happy about this job because it gives me the opportunity to express myself the way I can with other people whom have the same disability as me. No one has ever been rude to me. Everybody is so kind; I am thrilled to be working in such a nice place surrounded by such nice people. This place makes us feel normal and accepted. We all understand each other and it seems like being deaf is the normality here. No one feels left out or lonely; we are all friends and I hope it lasts forever.

Before this job, I wasn’t treated like I should have been so I quit and had really big financial problems. That made me loose my confidence but now this is all over and I’ve moved on. This job didn’t only help me financially, also psychologically. From now on I am the happiest I have ever been thanks to KFC.

Hope to hear from you soon Felicia,

With love,

CLARA CAMPBELLE
