(Virtue) Greek The goddess, or perhaps
only the personification, of virtue or excellence
of character. She was said to have lived high on a
mountain, close to the gods themselves.
Arete was depicted as a tall woman standing
straight and wearing a white robe. Some ancient
Greek writers suggest that battle and wars were
fought by men trying to prove their worth in the eyes
of this minor goddess.
Her counterpart was Kakia (Cacia), the personification
of vice and weak morals. In the few depictions
of her in Greek literature, Kakia is plump, vain, and
self-centered, and strives to entice people away from
the influence of Arete.
