Hellenes - Mythology. Greek The name given to the people now known as Greeks. The name was derived from Hellen, the son of Deucalion, who became, after the Flood, the ancestor of all the Greeks. There is no good explanation of why the people of ancient Greece should be called Hellenes, rather than Achaeans, Argives, or Danaans. The word Greek comes from the Latin Graecia, the country from which many "Greek" settlers came to live in Italy.
