Hyacinthus - Mythology. Greek A young man loved by the Greek god Apollo; son of Amyclas, a Spartan king, and Diomede, or of Pierus and Clio, the Muse. Zephyrus, the West Wind, killed him with a flying disc. Apollo created a fragrant flower, the hyacinth, in honor of his friend. Hyacinthus was an ancient, pre-Hellenic fertility god, whose worship was absorbed by Apollo's cult in later years when the Hellenes were invaded by migratory tribes. Followers held a three-day festival, the Hyacinthia, at Sparta in honor of the god, where boys and girls participated in games, competitions, sacrifices, and various entertainments.
