Tiberinus - Mythology. Roman The god of the river Tiber, upon which the city of Rome was founded. The river was vital to the fortunes of Rome. Numerous festivals were held in honor of its god. Some say that Rhea Silvia, the mother of the twins Romulus and Remus, was thrown into the river and became its spouse. In Virgil's Aeneid, Tiberinus visits Aeneas, who is asleep on the banks of the river, and tells him in a dream that his destiny is to found a city on the banks of the river.
