Vestal Virgins - Mythology. Roman Priestesses who guarded the temple of the goddess Vesta. They were guardians of the hearth who kept the sacred fires of Vesta burning. Vestal Virgins served for 30 years. If one was found to be unchaste, she was buried alive or otherwise punished.
