Area (mathematics). Area (mathematics), in mathematics, the size of an enclosed region, given in terms of the square of a designated unit of length. Formulas for the areas of simple geometric figures include a2 for a square, where a is a side; ab for a rectangle, where a and b are two adjacent sides; and pr2 for a circle, where r is the radius.
