Bob Cousy. Bob Cousy, born in 1928, American basketball player, coach, sports executive, and broadcaster, who was one of the greatest players to play the guard position in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Robert Joseph Cousy was born in New York City and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1950. He played 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics, (1950-1963), helping the team win six NBA championships during this time (1957, 1959-1963). In 1957 he was named the NBA's most valuable player (MVP), and he played in the NBA All-Star game every season he was with the Celtics. At his retirement in 1963, Cousy ranked first in the league in career assists (passes to a teammate that directly result in a score), with 6959, and third in scoring, with 16,960 points. After retiring he coached the Boston College basketball team from 1963 to 1969. In 1969 he came out of retirement to serve for one season as playercoach of the Cincinnati Royals of the NBA. He was named to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970, and he subsequently pursued a career as a professional basketball coach, sports executive, and broadcaster.
