Cairn Terrier. Cairn Terrier, breed of dog that originated on the Isle of Skye, perhaps as early as the 16th century. The breed is named for its ability to bolt vermin from cairns, or rock heaps. The dog has a broad, short head, with erect ears set wide apart and an alert, inquisitive gaze. The outer coat--usually gray or wheaten and darker at the ears, muzzle, feet, and tail tip--is wiry; the undercoat is soft and furry. The average male cairn weighs about 6 kg (about 14 lb) and measures about 25 cm (about 10 in) at the shoulders; females are slightly smaller.
