Laocoön and His Sons - art. This sculptural group of Laocoön and his sons is one of the finest surviving specimens of Hellenistic sculpture. Scholars believe it was carved in the mid-2nd century bc, but disagree as to whether this is the original of that date, or a later Roman copy. The sculpture was lost for many years but was rediscovered in the ruins of a Roman building in 1506, and exerted a powerful influence on the work of late Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo.
