Las meninas - - art. Las meninas (1656, Prado, Madrid) by Diego Velázquez is considered one of the great paintings of all time. The central figure is Infanta Margarita, daughter of King Philip IV of Spain. The king and queen can be seen in the mirror on the far wall, and attendants include the two maids of honor for whom the painting is named. Velázquez includes himself, standing by a huge canvas, perhaps painting a portrait of the king and queen. The painting is cleverly constructed so that the viewer seems to be standing where the king and queen must be. Bridgeman Art Library, London/New York
