Range Asian and American coastlines of the North Pacific Ocean. Habitat Sea otters spend the majority of their time in the water. Size Length: 1 to 1.2 m (3.3 to 4.0 ft). Weight: 15 to 45 kg (33 to 99 lb). Feeding Habits Sea otters are carnivores; they mainly eat crustaceans, snails, mussels, abalone, and sea urchins. Offspring The female sea otter gives birth to a single pup after a gestation period of four to six months. Life Span About 10 to 15 years in the wild. Did You Know A sea otter's underfur is the densest of any mammal: 1 sq. cm (equivalent) contains about 125,000 individual hairs. Sea otters are the only marine mammals without an insulating layer of blubber. Sea otters use rocks to break open the shells of their prey while floating on their backs.
