Second of May, 1808 - - art. Spanish painter Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes witnessed the horrors of war firsthand when Napoleon invaded Spain and deposed King Charles IV. In Goya's painting Second of May, 1808, French soldiers attack Spanish civilians in Madrid. Created in 1814, the work is located in Madrid's Museo del Prado.
