Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier. Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, breed of dog developed as a work animal in Ireland several centuries ago and named for the color of its soft, wavy, medium-length coat. The male stands up to 48 cm (19 in) at the shoulders and weighs up to 20 kg (45 lb). The small ears drop forward and the tail is docked. The U.S. Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1973.
