My beautiful vision of immigration is dead ! Fulfil a dream ? Move forward ? for me the travel was a challenge. Arrived in the boat , i was shocked because the conditions of life and the hygiene was awfuls ! It was not comfortable. I was in the steerage and i crossed the Atlantic in this conditions. But many passengers to prefer stay on deck ! The travel was worth it . When we arrived in New York city we saw the Statue of Liberty…But it’s a fake joy , after we went to the Ellis Island for make many examinations ! The Americans shouted “Quick! Run! Hurry!” in half a dozen languages. It was so irritating. We are in a long lines separated by iron railings , look like in a prison ! After One doctor looked for physical and mental abnormalities. And we received a chalk mark : L for lameness , H for heart , X for mental defects! I think it’s to much ! Many families was separated ( the children , ect ). The second American doctor was crazy : with a swift movement , he would grab the immigrant’s eyelid , pull it up , and peer beneath it! This doctors was greatly feared ! But it’s not over , the examination final was a questioning in English ( "What is your name ? Have you ever been in prison ? How much money do you have with you ? ", ect ) . Some immigrants were so flustered because if you could no answer you were allowed to sit and rest and try again ! And if you don’t make a success , you return in Europe ! When i arrived in New York , i had many problems . My life in Europe was better than my life in New York . Many immigrants hadn’t job! Perhaps immigrants had many regrets . To finish , i have only one sentence : Never go to New York !
