Zachary Taylor - biography. 12th president of the United States Birth November 24, 1784 Death July 9, 1850 Home State Louisiana Party Whig Term In Office March 5, 1849-July 9, 1850 Vice President Millard Fillmore Significant Signed the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty with Britain in 1850 to guarantee neutrality for any canal built in Central America to connect the Acts Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Supported the admission of California to the Union as a free state, though Southerners blocked its admission. Career 1812 Commanded the defense of Fort Harrison during the War of 1812. 1837 Led the U.S. forces that defeated the Seminole people in Florida. 1846-1847 Commanded U.S. troops in the Mexican War. 1849-1850 President of the United States. Did You Know Taylor's favorite horse, Whitey, roamed freely on the White House lawn Taylor did not vote in any election until the age of 64. Taylor was the second president to die in office.
