folksong o u folk. n.m., phénomène musical né dans les années soixante, aux États-Unis puis en Europe. Réagissant contre la disparition du folklore traditionnel, de nombreux chanteurs populaires ont adapté ses formes rurales au goût du jeune public citadin. Ainsi est né un style de chanson hybride, dépouillé et souvent engagé, dominé aux États-Unis par la renaissance du blues et des styles country-and-western, cajun et tex-mex (Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez), en Grande-Bretagne et en France par les traditions celtiques (Alan Stivell), ailleurs par des influences latines ou tziganes. Depuis peu, le folk a tendance à se fondre dans un courant plus tiers-mondiste baptisé « world-music «.
