the conquered and generals bring back the booty like Pompey who, in 62BC, returned from war with a booty
that was worth 70 tons of gold.
As taxes are being kept low for roman citizens, more tax payers were needed to
increase Rome's wealth as well as to finance more military campaigns.
Finally, more soldiers will join the roman
army, making it even more powerful as some of the conquered people will serve in the army or be enslaved,
making life back in Rome easier.
On the other hand, Rome lost many soldiers each time its army went to war.
2)b) What were the results of war for the roman generals?
Roman generals returning from successful military campaigns usually gain a lot.
They get richer from the booty
and also gain more influence in the Senate and more political power, as great military commanders like Pompey
often became successful politicians.
They are glorified at their return and all sorts of things are organized to celebrate their victories and ususally a
status was built.
The roman generals would ride in a chariot with his unarmed army across Rome.
Julius Caesar
organized 12 days of festivities for his victories over Gaul, Africa, Egypt and Pontus with the booty he came
back with.
Finally, they gain the personnal loyalty of their troops, like the ones of Caesar which agreed to follow him and
his coup d'état.
Their loyalty conveyed even more power to the general.
They then became the «vir triumphalis»
or the conqueror, an honorable and glorious title.
2)c) What were the results of war for the people Rome defeated?
The people Rome defeated, if not killed on the battlefield, were firstly forced to become roman citizens.
Then
some of them joined the roman army like the Hispanics who helped the roman army to cross rivers.
Others
might be slaughtered, enslaved, imprisoned, released or put to death depending mostly on their luck.
The cities
are pilled and sometimes levelled like Carthagenia.
They must pay taxes to Rome and accept Rome as its
supreme ruler while giving away all their land to roman settlers, not to mention the routine violence that came.
