Hello and welcome to all! I would like to begin by saying how grateful I am to have
been invited to speak here today.
It is sincerely an honor to join all of you in
recognizing Black History Month.
Black History Month was established in 1926 to
honor the achievements of people of African descent.
At the beginning, the festivities
only lasted a week.
Maybe they realize that in such a short period of time, there are
too many important things to talk about.
Historian Carter Woodsen chosen the
second week of February because it coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln
and Frederick Douglass.
It's a great time to go back in time and acknowledge the many fantastic gifts African
Americans have brought to our country.
Please, think of some names with me:
Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Junior, Rosa Parks, Sojouner Truth and Frederick
Douglass.
How different would our nation be without these leaders and countless
others fighting for civil rights? These people helped us understand what strength is
and what endurance is.
They smashed out barriers, they raised against injustice, and
they helped us come together as a nation to surmount our darkest days.
Them and
many others have contributed to build a greater nation where people are judged by
their character and not by the color of their skin.
It's not just Civil Rights that African Americans have left their mark.
What would
music be without Aretha Franklin, Louis Armstrong, Whitney Houston, Michael
Jackson, Tupac and Beyonce.
We wouldn’t have jazz, blues, rap, hip-hop, R&B or
even rock’n’roll.
It doesn’t just stop at music, it’s extended to sciences, literature,
entrepreneurship, sport, politics.
This list could be even longer.
They have had a
huge impact on every area of American life.
This is not an easy battle of course.
We don’t have to go back....
