It is a colonization of settlement, carried out by emigrants persecuted in their country for their religious or political convictions. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers, (religious dissidents followers of Puritanism), arrived aboard the Mayflower Puritan emigration continued until 1642, leading to the creation of the other colonies of New England.

These colonies developed an often theocratic and intolerant society, based on a very rich spiritual life (founding of Harvard University, in 1636).
