« Must a work of art fit morality to be enjoyable ? Ethical considerations in art emerge from the notion that artists should be held accountable for their content. But by imposing ethical standards on art, we risk stifling creativity and compromising the essence of artistic expression.

Art has always thrived on pushing boundaries, challenging conventions, and evoking emotional responses.

It is a realm where individual perspectives clash, societal norms are questioned, and innovative ideas are born.

Ethical constraints threaten to sanitize art, rendering it impotent and devoid of the raw intensity that makes it compelling.

We will see that there is 2 main camps that have a speciic answer to tis question Foremost, there is the camp of those who think that art should be controlled by moral authorities.

For example, PLATO was a huge anti-art because, in his eyes, it was a danger ; In fact he actually advocated its widespread censorship.

In fact, this question remains huge problems, like : « A work of art with contestable backgrounds can still be considerate as ART ? » We can illustrate this problem with the movie of Leni Riefensthal Triumph of the Will whic is, at first sight a masterpiece for the time.

But when we look forward, this creative work of art is just a an arm for the nazi’s ideology.

But, ther is also the Cristian moral resistance that confirm this movement we can call moralism.

In fact, the bonfire of vanities is a pure example of the moral censorship because an incensed and fanatical italian monk savonarole convinced mobs to burn everythinh he found heretical.

But finally, we can’t approach moralism without Leo Tolstoy who leaned into moralism in his work « What is art » ? He assigned that art is bad when it stopped being religious which is a a trully engaged though’s position. However, there is the camp of the autonomism.

The autonomist argue that art is free and not ccountable to anyone.

The most famous autonomist is Aristotle.
