Racial segregation in the United States is a racially based policy of separation between eighteen seventy seven and nineteen sixty four. Born as a result of the American Civil War and especially after the socalled Reconstruction period, the segregationist system gradually anchored itself in the law of the American states of the south, notably through the decision of the Supreme Court of eighteen ninety six.
