typical elements to define a style. Hairs can be read, blue, blond or black, it can be
long, short, curly, straight or it can be a crest. About what it concerns the behavior,
people can be excited, funny, stiff or run wild, impossible is nothing. Instead of copying
what is shown in the newspapers, or in fashion magazines, creating your own style is
like you have to mix what you've seen. Then, thanks to your personality, your liking and
your opinions, you change it. Then, the « classic style » becomes « YOUR style». From
that moment, you showed to everyone who you are, how you consider the society, thus
you are baring yourselves in front of strangers.
In that case, you allowed to be judge, to be hated or admired, you know what
they say : don't be fooled by appearances. All the same, this quotation'll be paradoxical
: you'll be judged by your appearances.
In my opinion, this is the most simple definition of the word « style ».
Nevertheless, I only defined the style, that's why I'm going to give examples to support
the issued thesis. There were a time where Lord Chesterfield, a British statesman and
diplomat wrote « Style is the dress of thoughts », this quotation became wellknown
nevertheless, it was invented by Seneque. The 60s constitute a « revolutionary
phase » in the history of the clothing creation thanks to the freedom . It is at first among
the youth stemming from the baby boom which builds up a « new clothing culture » .
Indeed, hippies, punks and disco fans, men and women express themselves as well
through the music as through their clothes. New groups appeared and imposed their
membership in a well defined style: " hippies " "sixties", " black jackets ", "mods"
"skinhead" or even "rockers" embodied the « counterculture ». Moreover the point of
view of the woman in the society also changed: they look for new clothes, favoring the
freedom of movement.
The word « hippy » comes from « hipi » which means « open your eyes or not
to be narrowminded ». Long hair were worn both by men than by women in the aim to
denounce the war in Vietnam where the soldiers had all the shaved skull. To strengthen
« the spirit's freedom », they were usually half or completely naked . Freed sexual
relations and naturism Were indispensable in their lifestyle. The clothes of the hippy
were contrasted, sometimes it was judged « shocking » because nonhippy were
always dressed in a dark uniform. Their pants were like ''elephants legs'', jeans were
usually painted, covered of flowers, by the way they wore Afghan vests, or flowered
Indian. The hippies belong to a certain kind of movement , they were for the « anti
consumption», that's why they often bought their clothes in secondhand clothes shops.
