Race and post colonialism Drama report Andrea García The play of August Wilson is a progression of events occurred to a family facing its social identity. The conflict in which this family is involved is related to circumstances that are constantly challenging them, on top of this they are in a very hostile environment for African American people. In the following times from the end of the war they are very often striving to get identities in their society. We see the view of two different generations, two different fights and the historical marks in each of them. The real protagonist of this play is the conflict between an African American father and his son. The struggle of a previous generation reflected in the life of the next one. How the bitterness of failure in a man can bring to its family such drastic consequences for the future to come. Emotional barriers and the problems that these ones bring to the life of the different members of Troy family is the main argument that the writer develops when introducing the character of Troy. In the play is visible the reasons for which Troy came to this world and why its ...

« to do things in certain circumstances or not.

In each one of the characters this conditioning factor represents itself in very opposite manners.

In the character of the wife of troy for example we see that she rather to take the consequences of his husbands mistakes before facing the world by her self.

In his oldest son from a previous marriage we can witness the fact that he only stays close to his father when this one holds his paycheck of the month.

On the side of Cory however he constantly faces the fact that his father is the main impediment to accomplish his future goals.

He had the firsts grasps of paternal discipline when he refuses to take a job in order to be able to play football at the school.

The argument grows bigger till they find themselves in a very similar circumstance to the one experienced by troy when he was in a very early stage of his life. The plot of the play has intrinsic implications about the racism faced by all the African American population in the U.S.A.

How this fact influences their lives and actions and why this delimitates the opportunities to chase by some but not for all.

Included in the development of the plot is the symbol of the title of the play.

Fences is a word used by August Wilson in order to demonstrate how his main character keeps constructing emotional barriers between himself and his family.

The main goal of Troy its to keep away all the things that can be far beyond his own understanding.

It is like this how through the reading we are able to comprehend that Troy as itself it is only a shady reproduction of the system in which his life takes place. Far beyond the characters plot and writing style August Wilson compiles a series of events that take place in a rude society for black people.

The post war period that supposed to represent the unification of a nation still has some lefts over from the time in which black people were brought to America like sardines in a can.

There is still people suffering all kinds of racism and discrimination, there is still people out there who considers accurate to judge people by superficial marks as are the texture of their hairs or the shade of their skin and certainly there is still jobs that are supposed to be only for “certain kinds of men ”.

Certainly the times changed but definitely not necessarily for better.

Many of the problems faced by troy are still a battle to fight for people all over the globe and many of the consequences of this problems will by shady factor to take in account for future generations to come.

Accurately written and coherently thought this play represent the struggle that seems not to have an end in the post modernist era, some things have changed but a phew remain the same.. »
