Greek The son of the river god
Cephissus and Liriope. He was a beautiful man. When
he rejected the love of Echo, a Nymph, Nemesis, the
goddess of vegeance, condemned Narcissus to reject
all love except that of his own image reflected in
a pool. Narcissus pined away and changed into a
beautiful flower that bears his name. The story of
Echo and Narcissus is told by Ovid in Metamorphoses.
It belongs to later Greek mythology.
