Sabines (Sabini) Roman One of the oldest
peoples of central Italy. In a famous Roman legend,
the new Roman settlers, subjects of Romulus, needed
wives, so they abducted the Sabine women. War
immediately broke out between the Sabine men
and the Romans. The Sabine women helped to
make peace by placing themselves and their infants
between the warring tribes. The Sabines and the
Romans became united as one people.
The seizure, or rape, of the Sabine women is frequently
portrayed in art. One of the most famous is
the painting by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens
(1577–1640) in the National Gallery, London.
