Benjamin Harrison - Biography. 23rd president of the United States Birth August 20, 1833 Death March 13, 1901 Home State Indiana Party Republican Term In Office 1889-1893 Vice President Levi Parsons Morton Significant Acts Signed the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, which prohibited business associations that impeded fair trade. Authorized the coining of silver currency with the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890. Raised the import tariff to an all-time high with the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. Expanded the navy and the merchant marine. Career 1862-1865 Served in the American Civil War. 1881-1897 Represented Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives. 1889-1893 President of the United States. Did You Know Harrison was the only president whose grandfather had also been president. Harrison was nicknamed 'Little Ben' by his Civil War regiment.
