LOCATION AND FORM OF POWER INTRODUCTION The notion of power represents both a source of political, social and personal integration and a way of revealing tensions and conflicts within the society. One can be subjected to power or accept it, the very essence of the society implies a hierarchy and therefore complex relationships. Considering this, we may wonder to what extent the plurality of forms of power increase our freedom and at the same time reduce it. In the first instance, we shall comprehend the location of multi-forms of power and its repesentation. Then, we shall deal with the resistance to power as power implies counter-power. I/The power of locations A/ Symbols of power : -Financial and political capitals represent emblems of two sorts of power. Money rules the world along with politicians. Ex : Washington D.C. (The White House) and New York (Wall Street) in the U.S.A ; Sydney and Canberra (Australia) ; London (10 Downing Street= The residence & office of the Prime Minister/government) (The City district is the financial area.) Buckingham Palace is almost considered as a synonym of royalty. (The pride of the British people) -Fascination for these places : the Ov...

Represents. Whereas (tandis que) 10 Downing Street is sometimes criticized as the building seems to be a cosy house and not an imposing one.

-Tradition : The pledge of allegiance = every morning at school in the U.S.A., pupils/students express their loyalty to the federal flag (The Stars and Stripes Flag) and the republic of the united States. -The superpower of the U.S.A : the American Dream.

From « rags to riches » Ex : Andrew Carnegie became rich thanks to the steel industry. B/ Power and communication : -Power as a show / representation of power.

Ex : The President's Inauguration Day (usually on the 20th of January) Barack Obama : a real show, Beyonce Knowles who sang, a gospel choir,...

-The Olympic Games can also be comprehended as a representation of power as every country focuses on the country hosting the games.

= Economic power (tourism, the media, …) Ex : London and its incredible show refering to the British traditions and culture (The opening of the ceremony with the actor Kenneth Branagh who performed a speech from The Tempest written by William Shakespeare) [ visible sur U tube ] Communication plays an important role in power.

Politicians use their image and their speeches to seduce people.

They also use the media and the internet to inform, educate or talk to the electors.

TRANISTION Therefore , political places symbolize tradition and also the voice of people as they can be heard thanks to their votes/ referendums/ etc...

Communication is closely linked to the notion of power and also to freedom. Contradiction= accepting to be ruled by a president/a Prime Minister/...

corresponds to the agreement to the limitation of one's freedom.

(laws/ rules/...), but to what extent ? II/ Counter-powers. »
