Andrew Jackson - Biography. 7th president of the United States Birth March 15, 1767 Death June 8, 1845 Home State Tennessee Party Democrat Terms In Office 1829-1833 1833-1837 Vice Presidents John Caldwell Calhoun Martin Van Buren Significant Acts Supported Georgia in its efforts to remove the Cherokee from their land, despite a Supreme Court ruling against the state. Vetoed renewal of the charter for the Second Bank of the United States in 1832, charging that the Bank misused its economic power. Issued a proclamation against state nullification of federal law in 1832, warning 'disunion by armed force is treason.' Recognized Texas as an independent republic in 1837 and appointed a U.S. diplomat to the republic. Career 1787-1796 Practiced law in North Carolina. 1796 Served as delegate to Tennessee's state constitutional convention. 1796-1797 Represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives. 1797-1798 Represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate. 1815 Won the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. 1818 Commanded an army expedition against the Seminole people in Florida 1823-1825 Represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate. 1829-1837 President of the United States. Did You Know Jackson hosted grand parties at the White House that were open to the public. Jackson was the only president who ever paid off the national debt. Jackson's soldiers nicknamed him 'Old Hickory' in honor of his toughness. The hot-tempered Jackson killed Charles Dickinson in a duel after Dickinson made insulting remarks about his marriage.
