Jo Da Silva Terminale Littéraire 06/10/15 DM d'anglais The notion of spaces and exchange leads us directly to the globalization. The globalization is this way used by the west to mix most possible cultures between them. It is thanks to it that we, today, can eat Indian, as Chinese in France for example. The artist called Banksy is a graffiti artist (what he makes is called « street art »), political activist, film director and painter. He mixes dark humour with graffiti. His works have been featured on streets, walls and bridges of cities throughout the world. We don't know his date of birth, his real name or whatever we must be know about him. He's an anonym artist ; And what makes him even more interesting. I chose to study the work One nation Under CCTV, it's a work of street art of Banksy, painted in London in 2008 and erased after one year. The work is painted in the stencil on the blind wall of a building of Royal Mail in the center of London. It contains the sentence « ONE NATION UNDER CCTV », in white, in capitals. On the right, under the sentence, a child wearing a red coat with hood and taken up on a scale, seems to paint the "T" of "CCTV". To the left, a policeman films the scene. A dog in his feets. In fact, the most important of this graffiti is the means. Firstly « one nation under CCTV » means literaly « une nation sous vidéosurveillance » in french. CCTV is « vidéosurveillance ». This painting is placed next to a camera.. Is it on purpose ? In this moment we talk about the walls, what is the sense to write on walls what we think about our society, our politic, our way of thinking ? Why on the walls ? Why in public place ? Maybe it's what for proove at the rest of the world that we are always humans, and when we are humans we must be free ? How we can link this picture with the chapter about Walls ? Is so simple.. This painting was made on the wall of Royal Mail. So the real question is how put in relation this graffiti and the notion of space and exchanges. We say a little bit before that this notion swam in globalization. So, we have there a sentence who denunciate the fact that we are ALWAYS watched by someone/something. And the fact that this sentence was written by a child shock even more. Because, already it's in relationship with children it touch us. We can't hurt children, we can't rape children, we can't abuse of children. We have too the scale. The child is on the top of the scale, a sign of danger, the child may fall down. And we have the policeman who is the ironical face… The policeman shows us the security, justice, law. But there he's watching the child. It's paradoxal, no ? He should tell to the child to come down, that is forbidden what he is doing. But he prefers to look. It reveals our society, we all prefers to look what are doing the others. We all we watch ourselves between us. Whether it is outside, on the Internet, by listening to in doors or even in high school by looking in always to know more about it on the others. If we talk about Internet, we must talk about stalkers, yes this persons who are watching us through cameras… They make fear. We are always watched. It's the sense of the sentence which was written by Banksy. We are always watched. When we call someone, it's directly wrote somewhere on the web, when we buy something too, when we look for someone too, we are always watched. Like marionette. Someone knows absolutly all of our lives. And it's scary. Banksy wanted to denunciate the fact that we are watched and that we can't trust in the law. He want to make us react and to make attention of what we write/say. It's in relationship with space and exchanges because there are an indirect link with Internet. So if it's talk about Internet, it talks about exchanges.
