Carolus Linnaeus - Biography. Swedish naturalist Birth May 23, 1707 Death January 10, 1778 Place of Birth Råshult, Sweden Known for Developing binomial nomenclature, the two-part naming system used to classify animals and plants by genus and species Career 1730 Accepted a position as lecturer in botany at the University of Uppsala 1732 Traveled to Saamiland to study its plants and animals 1735 Moved to the Netherlands to obtain his medical degree at the University of Harderwijk 1735 Published Systema Naturae, in which he proposed a classification system for flowering plants 1741 Became professor of medicine at the University of Uppsala 1742 Changed career, to become professor of botany at Uppsala, a position he retained until his death in 1778 1753 Published Species Plantarum, in which he presented his binomial classification system for plants and animals Did You The classification system introduced by Linnaeus is still in use today. Know Linnaeus believed that species did not change over time, but modern scientists use his classification system to indicate evolutionary relationships.
