Lawrence Taylor. Lawrence Taylor, born in 1959, American football player, who was one of the greatest defensive players in National Football League (NFL) history. A linebacker for the New York Giants, Taylor became known for his ability to sack opposing quarterbacks--that is, tackle the quarterback before he could release the ball. Taylor finished his 13-year career with more than 132.5 sacks. Taylor was born in Williamsburg, Virginia. He attended the University of North Carolina, where he was one of the nation's best college linebackers. The Giants selected Taylor in the first round of the 1981 college player draft. During his first season with New York, he earned the rookie of the year and the defensive player of the year awards. He earned the defensive player of the year award following the 1982 season as well. Taylor became the first of a new type of linebacker, whose primary responsibility was to pursue quarterbacks. Taylor used his remarkable quickness and strength to get beyond offensive blockers. He also developed new defensive techniques, such as batting the ball out of the passer's hand rather than tackling him. In 1986 Taylor won the player of the year award after amassing 20.5 sacks. Following that season he helped lead the Giants to a Super Bowl victory over the Denver Broncos, and with Taylor at linebacker the Giants won a second Super Bowl victory in 1991 over the Buffalo Bills. Taylor retired two years later, in 1993, having been named a Pro Bowl selection ten times during his career. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
