Critical Commentary
At the beginning of Act 1, Scene 2 of The Tempest, we have two characters:
Prospero and his daughter Miranda.
We understand that the scene is during the
same time as Act 1, during the storm.
Miranda and Prospero watch the storm far
away.
There are spectators of the Tempest, and Miranda is sad for the poor
people on the ship who are in the middle of the storm.
We will see that the
relationship between Prospero and Miranda is an important value in the scene for
understanding their characters more.
At first, we have a long monologue of Miranda, and we understand that she is
feeling distressed by what is happening.
She watches as she can do nothing to
help those people who are on the ship and feel weak “Poor souls, they perished.
Had I been any god of power…”.
In this phrase, we can see that Miranda is a girl
with compassion who cares for others, she wants to do something and tell her
father how difficult it is for her.
Is the beginning, she begged her father to do
something, she acknowledged the doing of her father, as she knew he was
responsible for the storm.
Prospero starts with a comment on the behaviours of his daughter, “Your piteous
heart”, and later “I have done nothing but in care of thee”, we can see that
Prospero at first has a rather harsh relationship with his daughter and hides
things from her.
We can see that she knew nothing about the plan of Prospero
and that all lives would be safe from the storm.
