« DNL TEXTE Quelques jours après les feux, sous le thème d’un journal télévise BBC NEWS. DIAPO 1 : Présentation BBC Journalist : "Good evening, dear viewers.

On tonight's program: Greece decimated by fires, the origins, causes and facts of the catastrophe that has been going on since the day before yesterday, July 17 2023, Spain takes over the presidency of the European Council for the first time, and the final of the 136th edition of wimbledon is just around the corner.

But first let’s focus on Greece’s summer inferno. DIAPO 2 : We begin with this very telling image taken by our teams on site. These are the first fire-fighting crews to arrive on the scene, struggling to bring the huge blaze under control.

The overwhelming heat caused by the fire, combined with a particularly hot summer, are contributing to very poor conditions for the front-line firefighters, who have been showing great courage over the past few days. DIAPO 3 : We delve into a heart-wrenching tale that has captured the world's attention.

Greece, a land known for its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and captivating mythology, is now in the throes of a devastating wildfire.

With more than eighty fires accross an area of approximaly one million eight hundred thousand squer kilometres leading to twenty eight deaths and over twenty thousand residents evacuated, Greece has turn from a dream destination into a nightmare. Our guests tonight are Dr.

Lydia Marino, a renowned climate scientist, and Mr.

Theo Kostas, a local resident of the island of Rhodes who has experienced the inferno firsthand.

First we begin with Doctor Lydia Marino, a lecturer in the Athen’s academy of science" DIAPO 4 : !!!!!COMMENTER LE GRAPHIQUE !!!!! Scientist : Dr.

Lydia Marino: "Thank you for having me.

The fires in Greece, while tragic, are unfortunately not isolated incidents.

We've seen an alarming increase in such events globally, and there's a direct correlation between these wildfires and climate change. Firstly, global warming has a direct and obvious effect on this risk by raising temperatures, 0.40 degree celcius increase since the 1980s, which will dry out vegetation more quickly and more thoroughly. Making regions like Greece, home to numerous vegetation areas, more susceptible to fires. Secondly, with the increasing frequency of heatwaves, the soil and vegetation become parched. The presence of all this dry fuel will allow more fires to start and then burn farther and wider, creating an easily ignitable tinderbox.

Lastly, we must address the human component. DIAPO 5 : !!!!!COMMENTER LE GRAPHIQUE !!!!! Urban sprawl (in Athenes, from 400 000 inhabitants to 4 millions today : Where you see an increase in the number of poeple living in the city forcing green areas to be removed to make houses for them), and other land-use changes can exacerbate the risk of wildfires.

It's a vicious cycle; the more forests we lose, the less CO2 is absorbed, leading.... »
