«
My quote is from scene five, page 53, from Blanche: “People don’t see you - men
don’t - don’t even admit your existence unless they are making love to you.” I think
this is a significant part of the play because Blanche develops the idea of her fears and
represents women with this quote.
While in the play the character of Blanche seems to
be really atypical and unrepresentative of women this quote demonstrates her sense of
vulnerability and fear of being just physically liked.
Moreover, the word men being
differently written in the passage also creates the idea that Blanche has strong feelings
over that sentence.
When Blanche said this quote I felt like I had more things in
common with her, and that she was a character that wasn’t that infernal or ridiculous.
I
felt like this realization of hers and her sentences concerning men were making her
more comprehensible, and possible to identify to.
Blanche is a complicated character
who seems to be stuck in denial most of the time, such as at the end of the play, but
also in the beginning.
First with her entry with the loss of Belle Reve that she doesn’t
really tell; but also at the end when she believes she is going to leave with a
gentleman.
