and today we’re the 18 (eighteen) of July which means it’s “MANDELA DAY” and today we’re welcoming Jeremy who lives in Cape Town in South Africa to talk about his point of view of this special day! Hello Jeremy, how are you ? Hello, I’m fine thanks. Great so to start can you explain to us what is the Mandela Day and the reason we’re celebrating this event especially in South Africa? Yes, so Mandela Day is an international day even if this is more important in South Africa dedicated to humanitarian action in honor of Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa and a global icon in the struggle for social justice and reconciliation.

The day is celebrated every year on July 18, so today because that’s the birthday of Nelson Mandela.

People are encouraged to dedicate 67 (sixty seven) minutes of their time to voluntary actions, symbolizing the 67 years of Mandela’s fight against social injustice. Well, that’s true that even if it’s considerate as an international day, we’re not fully aware of this day in other countries.

But does this day is really important in South Africa ? South Africans really dedicate their times to act or that’s more a symbolic day ? First, of course that’s a symbolic day, more than a day to act.

There’s a real message behind this day, we want to honor Mandela’s fight, a real struggle that led our country to the end of apartheid.

However, a lot of people are taking part in a humanitarian actions. And do you have any example of actions you can do on this day ? Yes, people participate to food distributions for the most deprived people, clothing collects, marauding, and more.

For example, this year, i’m doing a raising fund event in the street to reverse money to local organizations. That’s in fact a good initiative to honor Mandela’s legacy.
