Voyage and return stories One of the notion we studied in class is Travels, initiatory, journeys, exil. This notion includes the theme of Voyage and returns stories in which the main character travels out his familiar world into another one completely different, where everything seems abnormal. The character may be shipwrecked in a simple deserted Island with a strange civilation but also in a magical world. In both case, the patterns of such stories are the same : first of all, the strangeness of the new surrrounding fascinates the character and may be diverting. It's the stage of discovery, wonder and elation. Then, difficulties appear : the intrusion of a shadow conveys to a frustration mood. Gradually, the character feels increasingly threatened and trapped by the shadow : this is the nightmare stage where the character has to withstand all the obstacles to survive. When finally the threat on the hero becomes too much to bear, he manages to escape and return back to his normal life. This type of stories exists from a long time already since the famous Homer's Odyssey and is pleasant till now. But...

« return story that really makes kids dreams :  Peter Pan (1953)  = In this Disney   animated film, Wendy and her two brothers are amazed when a magical boy   named Peter Pan flies into their bedroom, supposedly in pursuit of his rebellious   shadow. He and his fairy friend, Tinkerbell, come from a faroff place called   Neverland, where children stay perpetually young. Enchanted, the kids follow him   back. But when Pan's nemesis, the pirate Captain Hook causes trouble, the kids   begin to miss their old life. All the patterns of voyage and returns story are present   in this story. Thanks to all the magic, all the adventure, the special characters this   story had been a real success in the whole world : it was taken up lots of time by   other movie maker after.  This type of story is very appreciated by children .  Even the famous french philosopher Rousseau said in  De l'education   that the   first book that his son Emile will read, the one who'll get a distinguished place in his   library won't be Aristote or pline or even Buffon but it will be Robinson Crusoe   which is the paradigm of all the deserted Island stories. But how comes a such   famous philosopher like Rousseau has a such admiration for this voyage and   returns story's book ?  II) Moral issues  To understand the said of Rousseau, lets focus on the famous story of Robinson   Crusoe : this novel of daniel Defoe published in 1719 was inspired by the true story   of an 18th castaway Alexander Selkirk. Robinson Crusoe , a rich Englishman, was   shipwrecked in a deserted island all alone. He had to build his own house, find his   food and protect himself from danger including wild animal and cannibals.

Robinson is not remembered for his many adventures when he has been   shipwrecked but for managing to remain alive and prosper during his 28 years   stayed in the island. He is then an example for every one = qualities of endurance   and fortitude, his psychological ans physical courage, his determination, strength   of mind, his ability to reinvent a world by himself =  he represents the triumph of  . »
