Began his study of medicine at a shrine to Asclepius, god of healing 157? Became chief physician to the gladiators in Pergamum 161? Moved to Rome 169? Was appointed physician to Commodus, son of emperor Marcus Aurelius ? Showed that injuries to different points along the spinal cord affect different muscle groups Did You Know Galen discovered that arteries carry blood rather than air, as was previously believed. Galen's medical theories were extremely influential for over a thousand years. Galen believed that every part of the body was divinely created in the perfect form for its function. Galen dissected and vivisected animals to study their internal anatomy, and believed that the internal anatomy of animals mirrored that of humans.
