DIAPO 1: Early Sunday Morning (1970) By Dick Bengtsson Today, I m going to present you a work which is called "Early Sunday Morning", painted by Dick Bengtsson. First of all, let's begin with the artist's life. DIAPO 2 The Artist He was born in 1936 and died in 1989. He's Swedish. With his enigmatic paintings Dick Bengtsson has fascinated and troubled generations of audiences ever since the 1960s. 25 years have gone by since Moderna Museet featured his works in a major exhibition in 1983. His works are as intriguing (=intrigantes) and spell-binding (envoutantes) as ever. Together with Öyvind Fahlström, Dick Bengtsson is one of the few Swedish artists of his generation who have ventured onto the international art scene in recent years. Few Swedish 20th century artists have the same capacity as Dick Bengtsson to evoke a sense of vibrancy and urgency, and to constantly arouse the feeling that he is saying something crucial. Despite the accessibility of his paintings, he refused to be deciphered(=decrypté) . He often portrayed buildings; these are no idyllic abodes, however, but authoritarian, impenetrable entities. One of the most surprising features of Dick Bengtssons work is his use of swastikas. Without comment they appear as though glued onto the paintings. What did he mean? In view of the dystopian landscapes, and especially, perhaps, in view of his own destruction of the works which gave them a raw, scarred surface, we discern a deep distrust against idylls, good intentions and salvation. The last years of Dick Bengtsson´s life were characterized by self-destruction (he was alcoholic). Moreover, an unknown number of his works were destroyed in a fire at his home in Voxna in 1982. He refused, or was unable, to conform to the artist role. For many years, he painted alongside a job at the post office, and he never had a studio but painted most of his works at home on the kitchen floor. This way of painting and his approach to art in general prompted critics to interpret his art as ironically intellectual, and his work does undeniably incorporate a sharp critique against faith in artistic freedom and autonomy. At the same time, his work is profoundly emotional Dick Beng...

« The use of swastikas in his master pieces created a big polemic in Sweden forcing the Prime Minister to remove two of Bengtsson’s paintings.

Indeed, because of the European Union Foreign secretaries meeting taking place on September the 4 th and 5 th 2009, Swedish authorities decided to remove these paintings judged “sensitive”.

Therefore, Early Sunday Morning (1970) (whose I m going to talk about later) and Hat and Cap Factory (1969) DIAPO 3 (commenter le tableau) was removed from Moderna Museet temporarily.

DIAPO 4 Artistic movement It‘s hard to determine the artistic movement Dick Bengtsson belongs to.

Loads of his paintings are Realistic and belong to the realism.

Realism in the visual arts is the accurate and objective depiction of the ordinary, visible world.

As Realists prefer an observation of physical appearance over imagination, subjects are represented in a straightforward (simple) manner without embellishment and without the formal rules of artistic practice.

Bengtsson painted lots of realistic buildings or places or even real character (as in Hitler och drömköket, (1973), where we can see Hitler and his generals).

Clique pour afficher tableau Hitler With El Tres de mayo , Fransisco Goya is one of the most famous realistic painters .

Clique pour afficher le tableau DIAPO 5 Dick Bengtsson is not only a realistic painter but also and above all an appropriationist.

Appropriation can be understood as the use of borrowed elements in the creation of a new work.

In most cases the original 'thing' remains accessible as the original, without change.

Roy Lichteinstein and John Baldessari are known in this artistic movement.

Clique pour avoir les tableaux des deux As for Bengtsson, he is unfortunately not very famous beside Sweden.
