This paper will take the approach of the European Parliament thereby protecting the democratic values of the European Union. Core values of the European Union will be identified, contrasting with past events going against these fundamental aspects as the "Santer Commission" and other contra legem manifestations. The results obtained will be assessed and discussion on the desirability of having the EP powers enhanced will be effectuated. A clear answer will be put forward to the question whether EU law should be altered. This will give the reader a good perspective on the powers of the EP over individual members of the European Commission. Finally, different opinions will be given on this subject but more specifically on the desirability of having a more democratic Parliament taking the various critics on the democratic deficit of the EU into account. The aim on this approach is not to influence any point of view but to give the reader the possibility to asses itself the different arguments brought to the attention of this specific topic. Introduction The European Parliament which is the only institution being directly elected is composed of 736 members in total representing the citizens from all member states. The maximum number of MEPs that a state may have is fixed at 96; on the other hand, no state may have less than 6 MEPs. MEPS represent their national parties at the European level and therefore mostly sit in one of the seven party groupings. « Abstract The aim of this paper is to examine EP’s powers over individual members of the European Commission.

This paper will take the approach of the European Parliament thereby protecting the democratic values of the European Union.
