Rutherford Birchard Hayes - biography. 19th president of the United States Birth October 4, 1822 Death January 17, 1893 Home State Ohio Party Republican Term In Office 1877-1881 Vice President William Almon Wheeler Significant Acts Ended the Reconstruction period after the Civil War by withdrawing federal troops from South Carolina and Louisiana in 1877. Initiated civil service reform in 1877 by forbidding federal workers to manage or contribute to political campaigns. Backed a sound-money policy by supporting legislation to make paper money redeemable in gold. Career 1845-1861 Practiced as an attorney in Ohio. 1861-1865 Fought in the American Civil War. 1865-1867 Represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives. 1868-1872, 1876-1877 Served as governor of Ohio. 1877-1881 President of the United States. Did You Know Hayes's family held the first White House Easter egg roll for children, a tradition that continues today. In 1880 Hayes became the first president to visit the West Coast.
