Sylvia Earle - biography. American marine biologist, environmentalist, and diver Birth August 30, 1935 Place of Birth Gibbstown, New Jersey Known For Furthering the study of oceanic life Becoming the first woman to hold the post of chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Career 1966 Received her Ph.D. from Duke University 1966 Directed the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida 1969 Accepted a position as research associate at the University of California, Berkeley 1970 Lived underwater for two weeks off the coast of the U.S. Virgin Islands, as head of the first all-female team to do so 1980-1984 Served on the President's Advisory Committee on Oceans and Atmosphere 1989 Became a fellow in botany of the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles 1990 Was appointed chief scientist of NOAA 1995 Published Sea Change, an account of her underwater explorations, and a plea for conservation of marine life Did You Know Earle set a record for the deepest untethered suit dive off the coast of Oahu in 1979, diving to a depth of 381 m (1,250 ft). Multiple oceanic flora and fauna, including the algae Pilinia earleae, have been named in Earle's honor. Earle had a master's degree by the time she was 20 years old.
