In 1896, after an incident in a train between a Black & a White, the Supreme Court made official the Segregation with the clause \"Separate but equal\". Unitl May 17th, 1954 officialy Black people were not allowed to mix with Wthite people in all public places and indeed the South remained mainly segrageted despite the Supreme Court's decision.

In December 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, there wad still segregation in public buses. Rosa parks, a black woman, refused to give her seat to a White person.

Arkansas was a moderate state but the integration ob black children in education was limited to a few children the first year. In Autumn 1957, in Little Rocks, Arkansas, White people assaulted Black students who darer to intergrate hight school. The tension had grown ever before school started ant the Arkansas National Guard was on the side of the mob. A first Black child went to school unprotected and alone but a guard blocked her way withhis rifle. She was finally rescued by an old white woman teacher. Few weeks later, the students finally entered Little Rocks high school under the protection of the US army.
