VILLEMOT Hélène, LLCE Anglais COMMENTARY ON The Yellow Wallpaper, 1899 - Charlotte Perkins Gilman ( Sections 8&9) The Yellow Wallpaper was published in 1899 and was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a novelist but also a versatile artist. This novel was largely inspired by the social context of the nineteenth century but also by classical and contemporary works. This novel trace the history of a young woman who just get married and gave birth to a child. Fallowing this events, she suffers from depression and her husband decided she needs some rest in a hereditary mansion far from civilization. Throughout the novel, the reader is witness of woman's frustrated desires and how that can lead to insanity. But more positevely, to the blooming of her originality and disclosure of her inner world. This novel appears to be a critic of women values in their domestic lifes but also within society itself. My first part will dedicated to the questionning of sexual gender traditional values and practicalism. Then, I will try to show how it affects individuals themselves and their relationship. Only to find that oppression is the source of all her fancies and...
