Use complete sentences to answer the questions. Script Q Right Hélène. You're a professional tourist guide. In your work do you often have to speak English? A Very often indeed, and not just with groups of American or British visitors. Outside of July and August, many tourist sites only propose visits in French and English, so I have to give guided tours in English to many different nationalities. We're getting more and more Russian, Japanese and Chinese tourists, and even in July and August there aren't any tours in those languages, so unless they bring their own guides with them, we have to use English. Q How do you go about preparing a presentation in English? A It depends really. If it's somewhere I've already worked like the château d'Azay-le-Rideau, I don't have any research to do as such, but I have to find out as much as I can about the group so that I can adapt my presentation to their level of interest. I obviously don't give the same sort of presentation to a group of students of architecture as I would to a group of school students. « 81T5 C01 – 2/4 in English, I even practise it with my friends.

If I’m going to have to use any words that are new to me, I try to find out how they should be pronounced, although it can be very difficult with some of the technical terms.

I know a couple of teachers who are actually from England and when I can, I ask them. Q What advice would you give to anyone who had to give their first presentation in English? A Well, the first bit of advice would be to thoroughly prepare their presentation in the ways I’ve just described.

Make a series of notes, but don’t write out the whole presentation.

Someone reading from a piece of paper just looks and sounds unprofessional.

The English you use should be fairly simple and clear, and your notes should be concise, just the information you want to give the group plus one or two key expressions.

Remember that many of the people in your groups will not be native speakers of English.

One important thing that I’d say is that unless you are guiding a group of specialists, it is not necessary to learn huge lists of architectural or other vocabulary.

Most of your group will not be interested in technical details.

It is far more important to learn the key words and structures that will allow you to give a good general presentation. 1.
