Rodin's Gates of Hell - - art. French sculptor Auguste Rodin received a commission in 1880 to create doors for a new museum in Paris. He based his designs for the doors, called the Gates of Hell, on scenes from the Inferno in Dante Alighieri's masterpiece The Divine Comedy, but he never finished them. After Rodin's death, bronze casts of the Gates of Hell were made from his plaster models. A detail from the bronze cast at the Musée Rodin in Paris is shown here. Gian Berto Vanni/Corbis
